Excerpt 1: Introduction
Welcome to the world of Harmonic Singing.
Every note you play on an acoustical instrument or every note you sing
has the harmonic scale as part of its frequency. What is harmonic singing?
It’s when you sing a fundamental tone while simultaneously singing
one or more of the harmonics of that fundamental tone.
The wonderful thing about harmonic singing is that anyone with the desire
can learn to sing harmonics. It has nothing to do with whether you can
sing on pitch or if you have any rhythm. You just create beautiful harmonic
tones that are unique to your vocal instrument. In most throat-singing
cultures women are not allowed to sing harmonics. But in my teaching
experience women can do it just as easily as men. Even children as young
as five years old can learn to sing harmonics.
I have incorporated different vocal styles from Tuvan throat-singers,
European and American overtone singers and sounds from nature to create
a vocal technique I call, “Harmonic Fuzion.” There are many
ways to sing harmonics, as a matter of fact, if you were to experiment
with your voice, eventually you could teach yourself to sing harmonics.
“Harmonic Fuzion” is based on universal principles of voice
production. If done properly you will never damage your voice, on the
contrary, you’ll develop vocal dynamics that will allow you to
sing any style of music.
The foundation for all dynamic voice production
is breathing. You will never reach the full potential of your voice
until you fully and experientially understand the breathing process.
Breathing is everything!
Begin the process of breath awareness by inhaling what you consider
a deep relaxing breath...
Excerpt 2: Zones of Your Vocal Instrument
Based on the teachings of the Sanskrit alphabet
let’s divide our vocal instrument into zones.
The first sound believed to have been uttered by humans is the sound
“uh”.
Say “uh”…. *** again say “uh” *** “Uh”
vibrates in the throat. This will be zone 1.
Now say “ah”***…..again say “ah”***…..
“Ah” vibrates above “uh” in the back of the
throat. This will be zone 2.
Now say “o” ***…. again say “o”
***……”o” vibrates at the top center of the mouth.
This will be zone 3.
Also, the sound “er” vibrates in the third zone. Say “er”***…..again
say “er”***……“er” will be an important
sound to assist you in singing harmonics.
Now say “e”***…..again say “e”
***…… “e” vibrates at the back of the top front
teeth. This will be zone 4.
Now say “ooo” ***…. again say
“ooo” ***….. “ooo” vibrates at the opening
of the mouth. This will be zone 5.
Excerpt 3: Pitch of the Fundamental Tone
Before we continue, let’s talk about the
pitch of our fundamental tone.
If the pitch of the fundamental tone is too high or too low, you won’t
get very many harmonics. Women tend to sing fundamental tones that are
too high, while men tend to sing fundamental tones that are too low.
You want to find a fundamental pitch that is in the mid range of your
voice. Eventually, you will find the fundamental note that will allow
you to get the most harmonics for your voice.
I get clear harmonics every time. Experiment with different pitches
and soon you’ll find your harmonic note.
With correct posture, inhale a comfortable centered breath and sing
the sound “ooo” in the 5th zone. ***
As you sing “ooo” place your hand gently over the throat
near the vocal cords. As you sing, there should be no tightness or movement
up or down with the larynx.
Now sing “ooo”***
Take note of the position of the lips when making
the sound “ooo”
If you ever watch opera singers or Tuvan throat-singers they always
keep their lips protruded. Yogis keep their lips in a whistling position
when singing vowels as part of their vocal practice.
As you develop your harmonic sound you will come to understand that
changing the shape of the lips will change your harmonics. Tuvan throat-singers
can create sounds from nature by changing the shape of the lips.
From now on when we sing vowel sounds keep the
lips in the “ooo” position. The only time you change the
position of the lips is when you want to create a certain harmonic sound.
Also, make sure your lips are in position before you start singing.
With correct posture, good centered breath, lips
in the “ooo” position, smooth breath pressure , sing “e”.
***
Try to keep the lips in the “ooo” position when you sing
“e”. At first it might seem a little awkward but once you
retrain your instrument it will feel natural to sing “e”
with lips in the “ooo” position.
Sing “e” again and be aware of the position of the tongue.
***
This is zone 4.
Moving to zone 3, sing “er”….
With correct posture, comfortable centered breath, lips in “ooo”
position, sing “er” ***
Again sing “er” and be aware of the position of the tongue.
***
Now sing “ah” in the second zone.
Make sure the lips are in the “ooo” position, comfortable
centered breath, smooth breath support, sing “ah”***
Again sing “Ah”***
Now sing “aw” as in ‘awesome.’
We want an open throat “aw”….
Almost as if you are yawning. Yawning is a great way to relax the jaw.
Feel free to yawn as you are practicing. Lips in “ooo” position
, correct posture, comfortable centered breath, smooth breath pressure….
sing “aw”***
Singing the vowel sounds with an open throat can give your tones a full,
rich vibration...
